At St Matthew's, we are committed to promoting excellent attendance because we know that every day in school matters. The Department for Education (DfE) is clear that regular attendance is essential for pupils to achieve their full potential. Evidence shows that even small amounts of missed learning can have a significant impact on progress, attainment and wellbeing.
The DfE defines persistent absence as attendance below 90%, which means a child has missed the equivalent of around 19 school days over the course of an academic year — almost four weeks of learning. Research consistently demonstrates a strong link between high attendance and positive outcomes for children academically, socially and emotionally. Good attendance enables children to build secure relationships, develop positive routines, access the full curriculum, and benefit from the wider opportunities that school provides.
We work in partnership with families to promote a culture where attendance is prioritised and valued. Our approach follows DfE guidance and is rooted in evidence-based practice:
Clear expectations for attendance and punctuality
Early identification and support where attendance begins to decline
Strong communication and partnership with parents and carers
Targeted support plans where barriers to attendance are identified
We recognise that there may be times when children are unwell or face challenges that affect attendance, and we are committed to working compassionately and proactively with families to overcome these barriers.
By working together, we ensure that every child benefits from the stability, opportunity and success that come from being in school every day.
