At St Matthew’s, we aim to develop confident, capable mathematicians who enjoy the challenge of problem solving and can apply their skills across the curriculum and in everyday life. Our mathematics curriculum is designed to build deep understanding, fluency and resilience from the very start of a child’s education.
In the Early Years, children begin their mathematical journey through practical, hands-on experiences that develop their understanding of number, shape, space and measure. We use White Rose Maths alongside a mastery approach to ensure strong foundations in early number sense, counting and mathematical language.
From Key Stage 1 onwards, we continue to follow the White Rose Maths scheme, using a maths mastery approach to ensure that all pupils develop a secure understanding of key concepts. Lessons are carefully sequenced so that knowledge builds step by step, giving children the time they need to explore ideas in depth and make meaningful connections.
Through our maths mastery approach, pupils are encouraged to:
Develop fluency in number and calculation
Reason mathematically using clear explanations
Solve problems in a range of contexts
Build confidence and resilience when faced with challenges
Lessons include a balance of practical resources, visual models and abstract methods to support all learners. Teachers use questioning and discussion to deepen understanding and address misconceptions.
We also use LBQ (Learning by Questions) to support learning in the classroom. This technology provides instant feedback, allowing teachers to quickly identify misconceptions and adapt teaching to meet the needs of all pupils.
To develop times table fluency, pupils use Times Tables Rock Stars, an engaging online programme that helps children practise their multiplication and division facts in a fun, motivating way. Technology is used regularly to support learning in mathematics, helping pupils build confidence, independence and accuracy.
Our aim is for all pupils to:
Develop a strong understanding of mathematical concepts
Become fluent in number facts and calculations
Apply their learning to solve real-life problems
Approach maths with confidence and a positive attitude
Mathematics is taught daily, and pupils are given regular opportunities to practise and apply their skills across the wider curriculum.
