At St Matthew’s, our science curriculum aims to develop curious, confident learners who are eager to explore and understand the world around them. We encourage pupils to ask questions, investigate ideas and develop a sense of wonder about the natural and physical world.
In the Early Years, children begin their scientific learning through hands-on exploration, outdoor play and real-life experiences. Through activities such as water play, planting, observing seasonal changes and caring for living things, pupils develop early scientific knowledge, language and curiosity.
From Key Stage 1 onwards, we follow the White Rose Science scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced and knowledge-rich curriculum. This approach ensures that pupils build their understanding step by step, making clear links between scientific concepts over time.
Our science lessons focus on:
Developing secure scientific knowledge
Building enquiry and investigation skills
Encouraging questioning and curiosity
Making connections to real-life situations
Practical investigations are at the heart of our science teaching. Pupils are given regular opportunities to observe, predict, test and record their findings using a range of equipment and methods.
We also make full use of our Forest School and outdoor spaces to enrich science learning. Outdoor sessions allow pupils to explore nature first-hand, observe changes in the environment and develop a deeper understanding of the natural world. These experiences help build confidence, resilience and a love of learning outdoors.
Our aim is for all pupils to:
Develop a strong understanding of scientific concepts
Ask questions and think like young scientists
Work safely and carefully during investigations
Appreciate the importance of science in everyday life
Science at St Matthew’s is designed to inspire curiosity, promote enquiry and help pupils develop the knowledge and skills they need for the next stage of their education.
